Pragmatic Free Trail Meta is an open data platform that allows research into pragmatic trials. It collects and distributes cleaned trial data, ratings and evaluations using PRECIS-2. This allows for diverse meta-epidemiological studies to evaluate the effects of treatment across trials with different levels of pragmatism.
Background
Pragmatic trials are increasingly recognized as providing real-world evidence for clinical decision making. The term "pragmatic" however, is used inconsistently and its definition and assessment require clarification. Methods
In a pragmatic study the aim is to inform policy or clinical decisions by showing how an intervention could be integrated into routine treatment in real-world settings. Explanatory trials test hypotheses regarding the cause-effect relationship within idealised environments. In this way, pragmatic trials may have less internal validity than explanatory studies and be more susceptible to biases in their design as well as analysis and conduct. Despite their limitations, pragmatic research can be a valuable source of data for making decisions within the context of healthcare.
